How to ensure adequate prophylaxis in the context of orthodontic problems?

Orthodontic prophylaxis deals with prevention and early diagnosis of problems related to overall bite condition, the way that parts of the oral cavity relate to each other, position of the mandible in relation to the maxilla and the development of related structures.

So then, what should you pay special attention to, in order to help your children avoid orthodontic problems and long treatments in the future?

🔵 regular examinations:

systematic check-ups at the dentist or directly at the orthodontist allow not only for an early detection of possible orthodontic or dental problems, but also observation and elimination of harmful habits and parafunctions.

🔵 intensive observation during the phase of mixed dentition:

when the child has both primary and secondary teeth, monitoring the development of bite and teeth alignment is particularly important. It makes it possible to quickly take appropriate action, should any problems arise.

🔵 maintaining oral hygiene:

also in orthodontic matters, maintaining proper oral hygiene is crucial.
Preventing caries helps avoid premature teeth loss, and preventing gum and periodontal diseases helps eliminate problems with loose teeth - which, in turn, influences the overall bite development.

🔵 orthodontic consultations:

if there are any doubts regarding bite or tooth development, it is important to quickly see a specialist. Postponing such a visit will make precise diagnosis and appropriate intervention impossible.

🔵 exercises and physiotherapy:

in case of persistent bad habits or dysfunctions related to muscle tension and functionality, benefits of regular and proper exercise should not be underestimated. In some cases, exercises can even help to fully improve the condition of the muscles and, consequently, facilitate the development of a proper bite.

🔵 elimination of dysfunctional habits:

an obvious need related to parafunctions and incorrect habits is, of course, their efficient elimination. It is worth paying special attention to behaviors such as thumb sucking or frequent and long-term use of pacifiers, which may affect the development of bite and teeth. One may also ask a doctor, which methods may help to give up bad habits.

🔵 appropriate, healthy diet:

proper nutrition is important for the entire body, and that includes the development of teeth and bite. Limiting consumption of sweets helps prevent caries, and giving up an excessively soft diet will contribute to the proper development of masticatory muscles and the adequate progress of natural processes, such as teeth exchange.

It is also worth remembering that although orthodontic prophylaxis is particularly important in the case of children, it also plays a significant role when it comes to adults. Orthodontic health provides not only comfort and proper functioning of many related structures of the oral cavity, but also often contributes to overall well-being, as well as aesthetics. Hence, regular visits to the dentist and orthodontist, maintaining good oral hygiene, taking swift action whenever it’s needed and proper care are, without a doubt, important – at any age.
